Classic Glasgow Sightseeing | 8 hours

An 8 hour tour of Glasgow shows how it has moved on from being an industrial city and port astride the River Clyde. It has developed its waterfront with new performance arenas and museums. It is the largest city in Scotland and was the European City of Culture in 1990 and UK City of Architecture in 1999. A bustling hub of activity, it is home to Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet. The Burrell Collection is world famous and contains medieval glass and tapestries, Chinese ceramics and 19thc French paintings. Pollok House contains a good collection of Spanish paintings. Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery houses one of Europe’s great art collections. Glasgow Cathedral dates back to the 13thc and contains the tomb of St Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint. Take a walk in the Necropolis for good views of the Cathedral. In Bellahouston Parkis the House for an Art Lover designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who also designed the Glasgow School of Art in 1900 and the Willow Tea Rooms. One of the old tenement buildings has been restored and opened to the public to give an idea of life in the early 20thc. The Riverside Museum of Transport designed by Zaha Hadid opened in 2011. It was the winner of the European Museum of the Year in 2013. Nearby is the tall ship ‘Glenlee’, a barque built on the Clyde in 1896. There are several bars in Glasgow where you can hear traditional Scottish music. Just outside Glasgow is Hill House, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1904 for a Glasgow publisher.
