This is where Her Majesty the Queen spends her summer holidays. She stays at Balmoral Castle and attends the Braemar Highland Gathering, usually held on the first Saturday in September. The River Dee rises on the Cairngorm plateau and flows out to the sea at Aberdeen. There are many fine castles in the area. Ballater grew as a 19thc spa town and is where the royal guard is based. The Queen attends Sunday services at Crathie Church. Visit the local whisky distillery, Royal Lochnagar, named after a local mountain. Prince Charles wrote a book called ‘The Old Man of Lochnagar’. The Cairngorms is the granite mountain range between the Spey Valley and Braemar and is an area of wild and dramatic scenery.
