North York Moors – “Heartbeat” Country

The North York Moors separate the Vale of York from the coast. This high ground of unspoilt heather moor blazes with colour in the autumn. Goathland, the setting for the television series “Heartbeat”, nestles alongside the North York Moors railway, bringing visitors by steam train. The moors fall away to the coast where fishing villages cling to the cliff edges. Captain Cook was raised in one such village, Staithes, and spent his apprenticeship in Whitby where the Abbey dominates the skyline from its high position on the cliff top.
