TOUR
Cambridge is smaller and dreamier than Oxford, set on the edge of fenlands stretching to the coast. The driver-guide on our private tours of Cambridge and Ely will set the city in context before showing you King’s College Chapel, famed for its choir and exquisite Perpendicular Gothic architecture.

Saunter along the college ‘Backs’ overlooking the Cam on our private tours of Cambridge and Ely, learning from other people’s punting technique before you try it yourself (steering the long, shallow boats is quite a skill) before exploring the town and visiting Trinity College. Here you will see where Lord Burghley – the inspiration for Lord Lindsay in Chariots of Fire – won the Great Court Run in 1927. Then try and work out just how they built the 18th century Mathematical Bridge, connecting two parts of Queen’s College.

Drive northeast from Cambridge towards Ely and look for the great Cathedral – one of England’s largest – towering over the landscape. Its construction began in the 11th century and it still retains its carved Prior’s Door and Gothic octagon and lantern, pouring light into the nave. Discover the village that grew up around the cathedral – don’t miss Topping, the wonderful bookshop – and if there’s time visit the National Trust’s isolated nature reserve at Wicken Fen.

Anyone interested in wartime or American airbases in East Anglia will find the Imperial War Museum on our guided tours of Duxford fascinating. Based in a former aerodrome used in both World Wars, its land vehicle and plane collections span almost a century. There’s an excellent Battle of Britain exhibition, a chance to board retired supersonic airliner Concorde and with luck, you may see vintage aircraft on the wing.
