A Woman of Words: Jane Austen’s Chawton and Winchester
See the place where Jane Austen spent her happiest days, in a house owned by her brother in the Hampshire village of Chawton. The ancient city of Winchester is where she spent the last months of her life, already ill, and was eventually buried, aged 41, in the cathedral.
Chawton: Jane Austen’s House, with writing desk and famous ‘squeaky door’ – Chawton Village – Chawton Manor and Church.
Winchester: Jane’s house on College Street – Winchester Cathedral grave – tour of Winchester, founded by Alfred the Great.
The rolling, wooded countryside of Hampshire was always important to that very English author, Jane Austen: she was born and brought up here and returned gratefully after her family’s sojourn in Bath. The 17th century house at Chawton has a charming atmosphere: here Jane lived with her mother, her sister, Cassandra, and their friend Martha Lloyd and wrote or revised all her novels.
Our personalised Jane Austen private tours in Chawton and Winchester include a visit to the house, with Jane’s round writing table and the squeaky door that gave her time to tuck away her work when anyone approached. The dining room is set up for a meal, the bedrooms are as they would have been, complete with a quilt made by Jane. They have re-purchased her favourite ring.
